SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 450
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize John Garamendi, the Insurance Commissioner of California, who is renowned for his work to reform the automobile and homeowner insurance industries in that state; and WHEREAS, John Garamendi is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, and holds a master's degree from Harvard Business School; he was elected to the California State Assembly in 1974; after serving a two-year term, he was elected to the state senate, where he served as senate majority leader and held numerous committee leadership roles; and WHEREAS, In 1991, John Garamendi became California's first elected insurance commissioner; he was appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1995 to the office of deputy secretary of the United States Department of the Interior, where his efforts led to major environmental improvements for the nation; and WHEREAS, Since being elected to a second term as insurance commissioner, he has worked collaboratively with business, labor, and legislative leaders to effect major improvements to the California workers' compensation insurance system; and WHEREAS, John Garamendi is a visionary and effective leader, and his accomplishments reflect his dedication and commitment to his fellow man; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby commend California Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi for his exemplary public service and extend to him a warm welcome to the Texas State Capitol; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
