SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 466
In Memory
of
Donald Joseph Spence
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Donald Joseph Spence, who died February 4, 2005, at the age of 72; and WHEREAS, Donald was born in Austin on June 12, 1932, to Ada and William Spence; he graduated from Anderson High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Huston Tillotson College, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity; and WHEREAS, Donald Spence taught several years in the Elgin Independent School District and then moved to Oakland, California, where he was the director of the Oakland Boys Club; and WHEREAS, After returning to Austin in 1976, he held numerous positions with the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department, including serving as assistant supervisor at Rosewood Recreation Center, as the first supervisor for the Givens Recreation Center, and as program manager for the East Austin area district; and WHEREAS, After retiring from the City of Austin, Donald served as commissioner for the Greater East Austin Youth Association for 10 years, where he was responsible for grant management and served as chairman for the Juneteenth celebration; he retired in 1992; and WHEREAS, Over the years, Donald Spence received numerous awards for his service to his community; he was a devout Christian and a dedicated member of the usher board at Wesley United Methodist Church; and WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Donald Joseph Spence: his wife, Barbara; his daughter, Vanessa; his son, Hugh; and his six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Donald Joseph Spence.
