SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 492
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased
to recognize Robert Bernal for his contributions to the
United States Navy during the pivotal battle for Iwo Jima in the
Pacific theater during World War II; and
WHEREAS, Strategically situated, the small island of Iwo Jima
stood as one of the last barriers between the United States Navy
and the Japanese homeland in February 1945; and
WHEREAS, The expected five-day battle lasted five grueling
weeks, and seaman Robert Bernal and his crew on the landing craft
lived on C-rations and K-rations the entire time; from the boat,
they witnessed the United States flag being raised by a few
Marines on top of Mount Suribachi; and
WHEREAS, Sixty years later, Robert Bernal vividly remembers
Iwo Jima; he is proud to have served his country in the historic
battle; and
WHEREAS, After World War II, Robert served three years in the
Texas National Guard; he was employed by the Texas State Troopers
Association for many years, and now serves as a car guard for the
Texas Senate; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby commend Robert Bernal for his service
to his country and to the state; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
