SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 518
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Chabad Lubavitch of San Antonio on the occasion of its
20th anniversary; and
WHEREAS, Founded by Rabbi Chaim Block to inspire a sense of
belonging among Jewish residents, the center offers a variety of
services to its congregation, including a summer day camp for
children, individual counseling, and Shabbat dinners where
people can assemble, socialize, and discuss Judaism; and
WHEREAS, The center also has a preschool and has offered
courses in Kabbalah and studies of the Torah at local businesses;
in 1998, Rabbi Block began the annual Chanukah on the River
celebration, which features barges gliding down the San Antonio
River carrying menorahs; and
WHEREAS, The Lubavitcher movement, which is a branch of
Hasidic Judaism, began in 18th century Russia; Rabbi Menachem
Mendel Schneerson revived the organization after the Holocaust,
and today there are more than 250 Chabad Lubavitch centers in 42
states; and
WHEREAS, A dinner and concert, "L'Chaim to Life," featuring
international singer Dudu Fisher, marked the anniversary at the
Empire Theater on March 27, 2005; Dudu Fisher has performed with
the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony
Orchestra; and
WHEREAS, Chabad Lubavitch has promoted religious and
cultural traditions in the Jewish community and has introduced
and informed the wider community about Jewish traditions and
customs; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby congratulate the Chabad Lubavitch
center of San Antonio for its 20 years of service to the community;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
