SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 560
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize John Galvan of Harlingen, who took part in the Texas 4000 for Cancer bike tour in the summer of 2004; and WHEREAS, John is one of a group of University of Texas students who rode their bicycles from Austin to Alaska to increase cancer awareness and raise money for the American Cancer Society; and WHEREAS, Two teams of approximately 30 members each left Austin on June 1 to travel across the United States and Canada to Alaska on one of two separate routes; one team traveled along the California coast while the other took a route near the Rocky Mountains; the teams met at Prince George, British Columbia, and traveled together to Anchorage, where the tour ended on August 7; and WHEREAS, John wanted to participate in the bike tour to honor the memory of his mother, who died of cancer; he and the other cyclists were responsible for raising $3,000 each for the American Cancer Society through pledges from family, friends, and supporters; and WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society officially endorsed the tour; it provided brochures about cancer prevention and trained the riders to conduct presentations along the way at hospitals, churches, and cancer centers to educate people on cancer prevention and early detection and to foster hope among those who have this disease; and WHEREAS, John is a fine young man whose efforts to provide hope for those who struggle with cancer are indeed admirable; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby commend John Galvan for his caring and ambitious endeavors and extend to him best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
