SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 565

	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 
recognize the Alpha Eta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha 
Fraternity, Incorporated, for its outstanding work in 
coordinating the Alpha Phi Alpha/March of Dimes-Project Alpha 
collaborative and for receiving the 2005 March of Dimes Project 
Alpha Chapter of the Year Award; and
	WHEREAS, In October of 2004, representatives from
Alpha Phi Alpha, The University of Texas School of Public Health, 
the University of Houston, Texas Southern University, the March 
of Dimes, and the Houston Independent School District hosted the 
2004/2005 Project Alpha Kick Off for the Houston Independent 
School District; and
	WHEREAS, The schools chosen to participate in the project 
were Westbury High School and Kashmere High School; during the 
event, the subjects discussed with the students included the 
Alpha national program Go-to-High School/Go-to-College, 
adolescent pregnancy and fatherhood, and responsibility, 
respect, and the role of males in relationships; and
	WHEREAS, Following the event, the brothers of the Alpha Eta 
Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha then created a program in which 
its members visit Westbury and Kashmere High Schools for the 
purpose of mentoring students on a yearlong basis and 
implementing the Project Alpha curriculum; and
	WHEREAS, The Project Alpha program has won several
awards in the past year for its contributions to the Houston 
community, such as the 2004 Uplift Award presented by 
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and the Commendation for 
Meritorious Service by the Board of Education of the Houston 
Independent School District; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby commend the members of the Alpha Eta 
Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity for their 
exemplary work on behalf of the Houston community and 
congratulate them for earning the 2005 March of Dimes Project 
Alpha Chapter of the Year Award; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 
them as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
