SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 575
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Chelsea Polk on her selection as the Corpus Christi
winner of the Sister Cities International Young Artist
Competition; and
WHEREAS, Chelsea is a junior at Tuloso-Midway High School;
her prize-winning painting portrays the religious wars ravaging
the northern African nation of Sudan and their effect on those
who are left behind when members of their families are killed;
and
WHEREAS, The theme of this year's worldwide contest, which
promotes peace and harmony, is "Connecting Global Villages";
Chelsea met survivors of the conflict last semester and drew
the idea for her painting from their stories; and
WHEREAS, Currently on display at the Art Center of
Corpus Christi, her painting will soon travel to Washington, D.C.,
to be judged against international competition; and
WHEREAS, By calling attention to the unfolding tragedy in
Sudan through the universal language of art, Chelsea has shown
herself to be thoughtful and compassionate, as well as talented;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby congratulate Chelsea Polk for her
achievement in the Sister Cities International Young Artist
Competition and wish her continued success in the succeeding
stages of the competition; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
