SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 576
In Memory
of
Travis A. Peeler
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
citizens of Corpus Christi in mourning the loss of the
Honorable Travis A. Peeler, a lawyer, lawmaker, and civic
activist, who died March 19, 2005, at the age of 80; and
WHEREAS, Born January 17, 1925, in Christine, Texas, to
Travis L. and Beatrice Wheeler Peeler, Travis served in World War II
with the United States Army Air Corps in France and flew more than
25 missions over Germany; and
WHEREAS, After the war, Travis attended Texas A&I University
and The University of Texas School of Law, where he graduated
second in his class in 1953; he practiced law as a partner in the
law firm of Prichard, Peeler, Cartwright, and Hall until his
retirement in 1998; he was a briefing attorney of the Supreme Court
of Texas and was an assistant city attorney in Corpus Christi in
the 1950s; and
WHEREAS, A lifelong student of politics, Mr. Peeler was
elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1960 and served
four terms; he was noted for introducing the legislation that
abolished the poll tax; he was also an adjunct professor of
political science at Del Mar College in the 1970s and served for
two years as chairman of the Nueces County Democratic Party; and
WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and generosity, he
gave unselfishly of himself to others, and his wisdom, warmth,
and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; he
was preceded in death by his wife, Louise E. Peeler; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
family of Travis A. Peeler: his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and
Bonnie Peeler; his daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Larry Dick;
his stepchildren, Blake and Jo Betsy Vaught; and his five
grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of the Honorable Travis A. Peeler.
