SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 577
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased
to recognize retired Army specialist and Vietnam veteran
Clarence Sasser on the occasion of Clarence Sasser Day on
April 3, 2005, at the spring convention of the American Legion's
9th District in Angleton; and
WHEREAS, Clarence Sasser was serving in Vietnam as a
medical aidman with Company A, 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry,
9th Infantry Division, when the company came under heavy enemy
fire while on a reconnaissance mission; within the first few
minutes, there were over 30 casualties; and
WHEREAS, Without hesitation, Sasser ran through heavy
gunfire to assist the wounded; he was hit by fragments of an
exploding rocket, but he refused medical attention and continued
to aid the casualties; and
WHEREAS, He sustained two additional wounds, immobilizing
his legs, but he dragged himself through the mud to save his best
friend, a fellow Texan, and he continued to rescue others and
treat their wounds until they were evacuated; of the 120 men in
his company, only 20 walked away unscathed; and
WHEREAS, Heroes are those persons who inspire us with their
courage and resolve in the face of danger; they are often
ordinary persons who rise far beyond the ordinary; only the
bravest of our nation's heroes are awarded its highest military
honor, the Medal of Honor, which Specialist Sasser received in
March, 1969; and
WHEREAS, Specialist 5th Class Clarence Sasser's
extraordinary heroism is in keeping with the highest traditions
of our nation's military service, and he has brought great honor
to himself and his country through his self-sacrifice, his valor,
and his courage under fire; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby commend Clarence Sasser for his
extraordinary bravery and his exemplary service to his country;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
