SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 616
WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is pleased to recognize the University Democrats on its selection as Most Outstanding Student Organization at The University of Texas at Austin for the 2004-2005 school year; and WHEREAS, The highest honor a student organization can receive at the university, this prestigious award demonstrates the vital role the University Democrats play in the campus community; and WHEREAS, In an election year marked by acrimony and disagreement, the University Democrats mounted a nonpartisan voter registration drive that added over 7,000 new voters to the rolls; it also hosted such activities as "VOTERAMA! We Won't Sleep Until We Vote" to encourage early voting; and WHEREAS, Noted for its strong tradition of activism, the University Democrats played a major role in the Travis County Coordinated Campaign and the "Hate is NOT Activism" campaign on campus; its members participated in forums and debates, as well as in such activities as Habitat for Humanity's "Shack-a-Thon"; and WHEREAS, The University Democrats distinguished itself as an organization by helping thousands of students become politically active and aware; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby commend the members of the University Democrats of The University of Texas at Austin for their outstanding work and congratulate them for earning the title of Most Outstanding Student Organization; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the organization as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
