SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 645

	WHEREAS, The L. V. Berkner High School Concert Band of 
Richardson has received a 2004 Sudler Flag of Honor presented by 
the John Philip Sousa Foundation; and
	WHEREAS, Named for and sponsored by longtime supporters 
and patrons of the arts, Louis Sudler, Sr., and his wife, 
Virginia Brown Sudler, this international award is given to high 
school band programs that have demonstrated particularly high 
standards of excellence in concert activities over a period of 
several years; and
	WHEREAS, The concert band program at L. V. Berkner High 
School entered into select company when it became one of three 
high schools in the country to be accorded this prestigious 
distinction in 2004; moreover, only 54 bands in the United States 
and Canada have earned the Sudler Flag of Honor since its 
inception 24 years ago; and
	WHEREAS, Under the direction of conductor Michael Brashear,
the concert band has won many awards, including selection as 
"Best in Class" at numerous festivals, selection as a finalist in 
Texas Music Educators State Honor Band competitions, 33 
consecutive 1st Division ratings in the University Interscholastic
League annual contests, and selection as a finalist in the Texas 
State Marching Contest; and
	WHEREAS, The gifted young musicians of the L. V. Berkner 
High School Concert Band have enriched the lives of countless 
individuals with their outstanding skills and earned the lasting 
respect and admiration of all who have been privileged to witness 
their talent; it is most appropriate to honor them at this time; 
now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby commend Michael Brashear and the members 
of the L. V. Berkner High School Concert Band on their receipt of 
the 2004 Sudler Flag of Honor from the John Philip Sousa 
Foundation and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued 
good fortune in all their endeavors; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be 
prepared for the L. V. Berkner High School Concert Band as an 
expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
