SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 656
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Dr. Rosie Sorrells on the occasion of her induction into the African American Educators Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, The African American Museum and the Dallas Regional National Alliance of Black School Educators sponsor a Hall of Fame program to honor educators and others who have made important contributions to the African American educational experience in Dallas County; and WHEREAS, An educator for more than 40 years, Dr. Sorrells began her career teaching preschool and elementary school children before becoming director of early childhood education in the Dallas Independent School District for 15 years; and WHEREAS, Known for tailoring programs to fit the needs of children, Dr. Sorrells assisted and supervised nearly 3,000 teachers who taught over 50,000 students; and WHEREAS, After her retirement in 1994, Dr. Sorrells continued to serve the needs of the school children of Texas by serving as a member of the State Board of Education for eight years; and WHEREAS, Recognizing her accomplishments and contributions to the cause of education, her colleagues established a teacher training scholarship in her name at Texas A&M University--Commerce; in 2000, she was named a distinguished alumnus of Texas Woman's University; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Rosie Sorrells for her many contributions to the field of education and congratulate her for being inducted into the African American Educators Hall of Fame; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
