SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 665
In Memory
of
George A. Donnelly, Jr.
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of Midland in mourning the loss of George A. Donnelly, Jr., who
died April 9, 2005, at the age of 86; and
WHEREAS, George A. Donnelly, Jr., was born on October 31, 1918,
to Helen and George A. Donnelly, Sr., in Muskogee, Oklahoma, where
his father was working as a scout for the Carter Oil Company, and
he followed the path set by his father, his grandfather, and his
great-grandfather, who were all in the oil industry; by the time
he was 11, he was pumping water for a cable tool rig run by his
father; and
WHEREAS, He moved with his family to Fort Worth in 1922; he
graduated from Central High School and earned a bachelor's degree
in geology from The University of Texas at Austin; and
WHEREAS, While at The University of Texas, he met his future
wife, Jean Copeland, with whom he enjoyed a 63-year union; the
couple married on November 1, 1941; and
WHEREAS, After serving a five-year tour of duty as an
officer and as a pilot squadron commander in the Army Air Forces
and accumulating over 10,000 hours as a pilot, George returned to
West Texas and joined the Eastland Oil Company; he and Jean lived
in Monahans, Odessa, and finally settled in Midland in 1959; and
WHEREAS, George was active in professional associations
in the oil industry, such as the Geological Foundation Advisory
Council for The University of Texas and the American Association
of Petroleum Geologists; he was an enthusiastic member of the
Exchange Club, and one of his favorite pastimes, other than
flying, was serving as a volunteer docent with the American Air
Power Heritage Museum; and
WHEREAS, George A. Donnelly, Jr., will long be remembered
by those who knew him for his warmth, his wisdom, and his valued
counsel; and
WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,
and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by
his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
family of George A. Donnelly, Jr.: his wife, Jean; his children,
George A. Donnelly III, Jan D. O'Neill, and Robert R. Donnelly;
his brother, Richard Donnelly; his sister, Peggy D. McConnell;
and his seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
so in memory of George A. Donnelly, Jr.
