SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 717
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the Cinco de Mayo celebration of the San Jose Catholic Church; and WHEREAS, A date of great significance to Mexicans and Mexican Americans alike, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the great victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862; the Mexican Army was under the command of Ignacio Zaragoza; and WHEREAS, The Battle of Puebla demonstrated to the world that Mexico and Latin America were willing to defend themselves against the imperialist designs of foreign powers; the battle has come to represent Mexican unity, patriotism, and pride; and WHEREAS, To share goodwill with the Austin community and to benefit the essential ministries of the San Jose Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council 10148 and the San Jose Catholic Church are sponsoring the Cinco de Mayo celebration in commemoration of this momentous date in history; and WHEREAS, At the event, food of all kinds will be available and festivities will include traditional Mexican dances, live music, games, and speeches; the celebration takes place on the church grounds on Saturday, May 7; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby commend the members of San Jose Catholic Church and of the Knights of Columbus Council 10148 for their work in organizing this Cinco de Mayo celebration; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for them as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
