SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 732
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the Baylor College of Dentistry as it celebrates its 100th year of providing quality education and service to the state; and WHEREAS, The dental school opened its doors on October 3, 1905, as State Dental College, a private institution chartered by the State of Texas, with 40 students attending classes in rooms above a downtown Dallas grocery store; and WHEREAS, It became part of Baylor University in 1918, operating as Baylor University College of Dentistry, and in 1971, it became Baylor College of Dentistry, an independent, private institution; it merged with The Texas A&M University System in 1996, and in 1999, it became a founding member of The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center; and WHEREAS, One of only three dental schools in the State of Texas and the only dental school in North Texas, Baylor College of Dentistry offers a four-year program leading to a doctor of dental surgery degree, a doctoral program in biomedical sciences, and postdoctoral degrees in dental specialties; an integral part of Baylor College of Dentistry is the Caruth School of Dental Hygiene, which offers baccalaureate and master's degrees; and WHEREAS, Since the founding of Baylor College of Dentistry, over 8,000 dentists and dental hygienists have graduated; more than half of the practicing dentists in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and one-third of the dentists statewide are graduates of the dental school; and WHEREAS, With its 10 dental and dental hygiene clinics and several specialized patient-care centers, the dental school is the largest oral health care provider in North Texas; it completes over 93,000 patient-care visits annually and provides services to 133,000 school-age children, senior citizens, and community residents; 45 percent of its patient-care visits benefit low-income individuals; and WHEREAS, The highly acclaimed Baylor College of Dentistry is a valuable resource for dental education in the State of Texas; its dedication to excellence in training and services has had a positive impact on the lives of the citizens of North Texas and across the state; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby commend members of the faculty, staff, and administration of Baylor College of Dentistry for their continuing commitment to ensure quality education and extend best wishes to all on the occasion of the school's 100th anniversary; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
