SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 797

	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 
recognize El Taller Gallery on the occasion of its 25th 
anniversary celebration on May 5, 2005; and
	WHEREAS, El Taller Gallery, owned by Olga O. Piña, was 
founded in Austin in 1980 by Amado Maurilio Peña, Jr., who had 
decided after an illustrious career as an educator to be a 
full-time artist; he initially opened a frame shop to augment his 
art sales, but his art and his promotion and support of other 
artists brought instant fame to the gallery, and he branched out 
with galleries in Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico; and
	WHEREAS, In 1991, Amado sold El Taller to Olga Piña, also a 
teacher with a successful career, who had long had a passion for 
Amado Peña's artwork; she had been collecting his art for many 
years, and through the gallery, she now continues a tradition of 
promoting and supporting artists from all walks of life; and
	WHEREAS, In celebration of its 25th anniversary,
El Taller Gallery is hosting a month-long exhibition entitled
Cinco Artistas de Mayo, which will showcase the work of five fine 
art graduates from across the state; and
	WHEREAS, In addition, the Chicano Art Collection by
Amado Peña, who will attend the anniversary celebration, will be 
on special exhibit at the gallery; the 12-piece collection, now 
owned by Olga, has been in storage for 30 years and has never 
before been on display; and
	WHEREAS, El Taller Gallery is renowned for its excellent 
collection of Latino and Southwestern art, and Texans are honored 
to have a gallery of this caliber in our capital city; now, 
therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to El Taller Gallery and its 
founder, Amado M. Peña, Jr., on its 25th anniversary and extend 
best wishes to owner Olga O. Piña for a memorable anniversary 
celebration; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 
the gallery as an expression of the high regard of the 
Texas Senate.
