SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 846
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize North Texas Student Voices, a program that encourages young people to become better informed about local issues and to actively participate in civic life and the political process; and WHEREAS, North Texas Student Voices is a partnership between the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania and KERA Unlimited; through the program, local high school government teachers receive training to implement the Student Voices curriculum and become KERA master teachers; and WHEREAS, Under the guidance of the specially trained teachers, students learn to identify, research, and analyze issues confronting their communities and learn methods to make their voices heard in the democratic process; and WHEREAS, Through forums and classroom visits, students have the opportunity to voice their concerns to community leaders, candidates, and public officials; and WHEREAS, The students have a Student Voices Web site where they can identify and locate their elected officials and exchange ideas with their peers in discussion forums; they also participate in mock elections, voter registration drives, ballot box training, civics fairs, and other events to prepare them for the responsibilities that accompany citizenship; and WHEREAS, High school students currently participating in the North Texas Student Voices program are Paige Campbell, Aaron Vera, Jarvis Bonner, and Wendy Knaupe; they are exemplary young people who will surely have a significant voice in the future of North Texas and this state; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby commend the young people participating in the North Texas Student Voices project and express gratitude to the sponsors of this remarkable program; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of North Texas Student Voices as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
