SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 850
In Memory
of
Adele Cherry Carnahan
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Adele Cherry Carnahan, who
died recently at the age of 89; and
WHEREAS, Adele was born December 1, 1915, in Dierks, Arkansas,
to Jesse and Clellie Mae Cherry; she graduated as a registered
nurse from Saint Joseph's Hospital in Hot Springs, Arkansas, in
1938; and
WHEREAS, Adele entered the United States Army in
1939 and rose to the rank of first lieutenant; there she met
Captain Richard Henry Carnahan, and they were married in 1940;
their postings included Carlisle Barracks in Pennsylvania and
Mitchell Field in New York; and
WHEREAS, The couple settled in San Antonio after World War II;
while Dick established his private practice as a dentist, Adele
began a career with the San Antonio Independent School District
spanning 30 years as a school nurse, teacher, and counselor; and
WHEREAS, During her tenure as a teacher, she earned a
master's degree in psychology from Trinity University in 1968 and a
master's degree in education from Our Lady of the Lake University
in 1972; she became a licensed professional counselor and was
awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award as School Counselor from
the San Antonio Independent School District; and
WHEREAS, Active in civic affairs, Adele was a member of the
San Antonio Assistance League and served as president of the
San Antonio Dental Auxiliary; the Carnahans were a founding
family of Saint Luke's Episcopal Church, and Adele served with
the Altar Guild and the Stephen Ministry and as a Lay Reader; and
WHEREAS, Her wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be
forgotten by those who knew her; Adele was a devoted wife and
mother, and she leaves behind countless memories that will be
cherished by her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
family of Adele Cherry Carnahan: her husband, Richard Carnahan; her
son, Richard Carnahan, Jr.; her daughters, Susan Cherry Hawthorne
and Peggy Taylor; and her seven grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
so in memory of Adele Cherry Carnahan.
