SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 853
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Conrad "Prof" Johnson for his years of dedication as a band member, bandleader, and consummate jazz educator; and WHEREAS, Prof graduated from Jack Yates High School and Wiley College; he continued his studies at Texas Southern University, Prairie View A&M University, and the University of Southern California; and WHEREAS, A high school band director for 37 years, Prof taught at his alma mater, Jack Yates High School, and at Booker T. Washington High School; he was band director at Kashmere Senior High School for 21 years and was responsible for making its band a legend in Texas and around the country; and WHEREAS, In 1972, the Kashmere Stage Band was named "Best High School Band" in the nation; today, the music department at Kashmere Senior High School is called The Conrad O. Johnson School of Music and Fine Arts in his honor; and WHEREAS, In addition, The Conrad O. Johnson Music and Fine Arts Foundation is a nonprofit organization that awards scholarships to high school students and sponsors summer workshops featuring noted jazz musicians; and WHEREAS, Prof retired in 1978, yet he is still instructing and instilling in young people a love of jazz and the determination to become good musicians and better human beings; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby commend Conrad "Prof" Johnson for his exceptional talent and his contributions to the fields of education and music in Texas; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
