SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 858
In Memory
of
DarNell Gerard Pemberton
WHEREAS, The Texas Senate joins the citizens of Dallas in
mourning the loss of the Reverend DarNell Gerard Pemberton, who
died May 5, 2005, at the age of 62; and
WHEREAS, DarNell Pemberton was born March 5, 1943, in
Fort Worth to Reverend DarNell John Pemberton and Gwen Alston; he
grew up in Chicago, where he began his education and community
service; and
WHEREAS, He served in the United States Marine Corps from
1960 to 1964, and shortly after leaving military service, he
married his longtime sweetheart, Edna B. Dean; the couple was
blessed with four daughters, and later adopted eight nieces and
nephews; and
WHEREAS, The family moved to Richmond, California, and
DarNell earned bachelor's and master's degrees from San Francisco
State University; he worked for the Richmond Police Department
for 10 years; and
WHEREAS, In 1978 DarNell and his family moved to Dallas;
there he attended Southwest Theological Seminary and began
working as youth pastor at Concord Baptist Church; he also worked
for the Texas Youth Commission and Child Protective Services; he
was involved in many community service projects, including crime
watch programs, clothing drives, feeding the underprivileged,
and registering voters; he served as an election judge and
precinct chair and as a commissioner with the Boy Scouts program;
and
WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity,
Reverend Pemberton gave unselfishly of his time to others, and
his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by
those who knew him; and
WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband and father, and he leaves
behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and
many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
family of Reverend DarNell Gerard Pemberton: his loving wife
of 41 years, Edna Dean Pemberton; his daughters, Enda Jean Jones,
Rita Susanne Williams, Lisa Dawn Evans, and Myra Gwendolyn Thomas;
his sister, Oteia Gordon; his adopted nieces and nephews,
George Andrews, Pandora Jackson, Marcus Dean, Anthony Dean,
Victor Dean, Ellen Dean Banks, and Tammy Dean Owens; and his many
grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
so in memory of Reverend DarNell Gerard Pemberton.
