SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 866
In Memory
of
Wallace H. Scott, Jr.
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of Austin in mourning the loss of legendary Texas football player
and lawyer Wallace H. Scott, Jr., who died April 25, 2005, at the
age of 84; and
WHEREAS, Wally Scott was born November 7, 1920, on a small
farm in Iron City, Alabama, to Lillie and Wallace Scott; his
family moved to Texas during the Great Depression and settled in
Laredo and then Tyler, where Wally was a star football player his
senior year at Tyler High School; he was inducted into the Texas
High School Football Hall of Fame in 1998; and
WHEREAS, Wally earned a scholarship to play football at
The University of Texas, and his family followed him to Austin;
he was captain of the 1941-1942 team featured on the cover of Life
magazine; he was a well-known figure in The University of Texas
athletics program and was inducted into the university's
Hall of Honor in l977; and
WHEREAS, After college graduation, Wally joined the Navy
and served as a lieutenant in the Pacific Theater during
World War II; he was truly a distinguished member and a leader
of the "Greatest Generation"; and
WHEREAS, Following his military service, Wally earned a
degree from The University of Texas School of Law and became a
successful and respected oil and gas attorney; he was the first
attorney hired by the Oil and Gas Division of the Texas Railroad
Commission and later cofounded the Austin law firm of
Scott, Douglass, and McConnico; he was active in politics early
in his life and worked to elect his friends, Buford Jester,
John Connally, and Lyndon B. Johnson; and
WHEREAS, A well-known community leader and a loyal
university alumnus, Wally cofounded the Longhorn Club, the
predecessor of The Longhorn Foundation, with the late
Frank Erwin; he was instrumental in raising funds for and
creating the T-Letterman's Lounge and the 200 Horns Club and
served on The University of Texas Athletics Council for over
20 years; and
WHEREAS, A man of integrity, courage, and generosity,
Wally Scott lived a long and productive life, and his wisdom,
warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who
knew him; and
WHEREAS, Wally enjoyed golfing and boating and fishing in
Port O'Connor; he was devoted to his family and loved to spend
time with his children, his grandchildren, and his wife of
54 years; known affectionately as "The General," Wally Scott
lived his life to the fullest, and he leaves behind memories that
will be treasured forever by his family and many friends; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family of Wallace H. Scott, Jr.: his wife, Cile Scott;
his daughter and son-in-law, Cathy Scott McElroy and Mike; his
sons and daughters-in-law, Wally Scott III and Marietta and
Willy Scott and Janet; his sister, Lillian Scott; and his eight
grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Wallace H. Scott, Jr.
