SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 874
In Memory
of
William N. Sholl
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of William N. Sholl, Jr., who died April 17, 2005, at the age of 93; and WHEREAS, Born June 9, 1911, in Jasper, Alabama, Bill grew up in southern Oklahoma; he graduated from Southeastern State University, where he edited the student newspaper, was the first recipient of the school's Gold Key journalism award, and where he began his lifelong career in journalism; and WHEREAS, While city editor of the McCurtain Gazette in Idabel, Oklahoma, Bill met his wife, Margaret Elizabeth Moorman, with whom he shared a wonderful life and their four children until her death in 1981; he joined the United States Navy in 1941 and participated in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns in the South Pacific; and WHEREAS, After World War II, Bill moved to San Antonio and resumed his journalism career at Fort Sam Houston; among the many jobs he held was chief of the press branch of the Fourth Army Information Office; and WHEREAS, At ceremonies in his honor held at his retirement in 1981, Bill received the United States Army Forces Command 4th Estate Award for Excellence in Military Journalism; he also received one of the highest awards given a civilian employee, the Department of the Army Commander's Award for Civilian Service; after retiring he served as volunteer editor of the Senior Sentinel, a monthly newspaper published by the Senior Citizens Council of Bexar County, until 2004; and WHEREAS, Bill was a member of numerous civic organizations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Gideons International, and he was the recipient of many awards and honors; the Texas Senior Citizens Association named him Senior Citizen of the Year in 1997, and in 2000 he and his second wife, Adela, were named to its Hall of Fame, the first couple to be so honored simultaneously; and WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and generosity, Bill gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and WHEREAS, A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Bill leaves behind countless memories that will be cherished forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of William N. Sholl, Jr.: his wife, Adela Sholl; his son, William N. Sholl III; his daughters, Emily Grimes, Elizabeth Collins, and Marilyn Daniels; his sisters, Louise Dutcher, Margaret Harris, and Mary Drage; and nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of William N.
