SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 897
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Kerron Clement of La Porte for setting a new indoor
world record of 44.57 seconds in the 400 meters; and
WHEREAS, Competing for the University of Florida at the
National Collegiate Athletic Association Indoor Track
Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Kerron beat the
previous record of 44.63 seconds established by Olympic champion
Michael Johnson, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest
track athletes in history; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his record-shattering performance
in the 400 meters, Kerron ran the anchor leg for Florida's
1,600-meter relay team that set a collegiate record with a
winning time of 3:03.51; and
WHEREAS, While a student at La Porte High School, Kerron
won the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles titles as a junior, and
he won the 300-meter hurdles as a senior with a state-record
time; he was named the Gatorade National High School Boys Track
and Field Athlete of the Year in 2003; and
WHEREAS, Through his hard work and perseverance, Kerron has
brought honor to his community and his state, and the Texas Senate is
pleased to congratulate him on his record-breaking performance;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby commend Kerron Clement for his many
outstanding athletic achievements and wish him continued success
in the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
