SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 905
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Al Velarde, who will begin serving as the new executive
director of the Child Crisis Center of El Paso in July; and
WHEREAS, As director of the Child Crisis Center, Al hopes
to play an important role in preventing child abuse; the center,
a nonprofit agency, provides a home for infants and children of
parents who are temporarily unable to cope with their
responsibilities; and
WHEREAS, A retired police sergeant, Al formerly served as
the police spokesman for the El Paso Police Department; he
realized that he wanted to improve the plight of child abuse
victims after the department's investigation of the brutal
slaying of a five-year-old child; and
WHEREAS, Al also worked with underprivileged children
during his tenure as division director at the El Paso Housing
Authority, where he supervised housing programs and community
services, giving him insight into the burden poverty places on
parents; and
WHEREAS, Al Velarde's energy and optimism will provide a
positive role model for the children at the crisis center, and
his experience and expertise will help the center continue to
provide relief and care to the neglected and abused children in
El Paso; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby congratulate Al Velarde on his new
position as the executive director of the Child Crisis Center of
El Paso and extend to him best wishes for his future endeavors;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
