SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 960
In Memory
of
Laura Canales
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
commemorates the life of Laura Canales, who died April 16, 2005,
at the age of 50; and
WHEREAS, Born August 19, 1954, in Kingsville, Laura was
known as the Queen of Tejano music; she made her recording debut
in 1973 with Los Unicos; and
WHEREAS, Widely credited with pioneering the way for
female Tejano singers in a field dominated by men, Laura won her
first female entertainer and female vocalist of the year award at
the Tejano Music Awards in 1981; she won both awards again each
year from 1983 to 1987; and
WHEREAS, Among her many hit singles were "Midnight Blue"
and "Si Vivi Contigo"; her 1990 album "No Regrets" remained on
the Billboard regional Mexican chart for 13 weeks; and
WHEREAS, Laura returned to school, and in 1997 she
graduated from Texas A&M University--Kingsville; as a role
model, she understood that she could play a role in the lives of
teenagers and wanted to emphasize to them the value of staying in
school and continuing their education into college; and
WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and determination,
Laura gave generously of herself to others, and her wisdom,
warmth, and dauntless spirit will not be forgotten by those who
knew her; she leaves behind memories that will be treasured by
her family, her friends, and her millions of fans; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family of Laura Canales: her mother, Maria Elena, and
her brother, Joel; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Laura Canales.
