SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 982
In Memory
of
Simon Y. Rodriguez
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Lieutenant Colonel
Simon Y. Rodriguez, who died May 3, 2005, at the age of 77; and
WHEREAS, Born April 1, 1928, in Del Rio, to Dr. Simon and
Catalina Vargas Rodriguez, Simon attended Del Rio High School
and The University of Texas at Austin; he earned his law degree
from Saint Mary's University School of Law and his master's
degree of law from the University of Virginia School of Law; and
WHEREAS, Simon had a long and distinguished career in the
United States Army; among his numerous citations were the Legion
of Merit, the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army
Commendation Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Vietnam
Service Medal with Three Battle Stars; and
WHEREAS, After his military career, Simon continued to
serve the public interest by becoming chief legal counsel for the
Texas Department of Human Services and the Texas Rehabilitation
Commission; and
WHEREAS, Simon belonged to many professional organizations,
among them the American Bar Association, Delta Theta Phi Law
Fraternity, and the Mexican American Bar Association of Texas; he
was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member
of the American Legion; and
WHEREAS, The State Bar of Texas honored Simon for his
contributions and his commitment to the principle of equal justice
for all; he also received recognition for 50 years as a member of
the state bar; and
WHEREAS, Simon gave generously of himself to others, and
his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by
those who knew him; a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and
brother, he leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever
by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family of Lieutenant Colonel Simon Y. Rodriguez: his
wife, Mary Helen Rodriguez; his daughters, Virginia Hunkin and
Diana Pfaff; his sons, Simon D. Rodriguez, Hector M. Rodriguez,
Tre' Valadez, and Raymond Valadez; his sisters, Leticia R. Galindo
and Rosa Marta R. Trevino; his brother, Rolando Rodriguez; and
his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Lieutenant Colonel Simon Y. Rodriguez.
