SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 992

	WHEREAS, The Honorable Dori Contreras Garza was recognized 
as Mother of the Year 2005 by AVANCE-Rio Grande Valley at a special 
gala on May 7, 2005, in McAllen; and
	WHEREAS, Working to prevent child abuse and neglect, AVANCE
is a nonprofit organization that offers programs designed to 
enhance parenting skills, foster optimal development of children,
and promote educational, personal, and economic success; and
	WHEREAS, Judge Garza is most deserving of this organization's
Mother of the Year accolade, for she has consistently demonstratedthe 
finest qualities of motherhood, including compassion, dedication, and 
sacrifice; and
	WHEREAS, A 1990 graduate of the University of Houston Law 
Center, where she was one of six students to earn the Distinguished
Service Award, she won election to the Thirteenth Court of Appeals
in 2002; she is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Mexican 
American Bar Association of Texas, the Cameron County Bar
Association, the Nueces County Bar Association, and the National 
Association of Women Judges; she is a former president of the 
Hidalgo County Bar Association, a board member of the Texas Trial 
Lawyers Association, and a board member of the Association of 
Trial Lawyers of America; and
	WHEREAS, Above all else, she is a devoted mother to her 
children, Lisette, Vanessa, and Michael, whom she has nurtured 
and sustained with tenderness, insight, and wisdom; and
	WHEREAS, Successfully balancing the demands of motherhood 
with those of a prestigious career is a difficult undertaking, 
and Judge Garza has earned the respect and admiration of all who 
are privileged to know her for her truly impressive achievements 
in this regard; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby extend to the Honorable Dori Garza 
congratulations on her selection as Mother of the Year 2005 by 
AVANCE-Rio Grande Valley and sincere best wishes for continued 
success and happiness; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 
Judge Garza as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
