SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1006

	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased 
to recognize Shirley Jean Brooks Barton on the occasion of her
retirement from David W. Carter High School in Dallas; and
	WHEREAS, A gifted and versatile educator, Shirley Barton 
served as a health teacher, a physical education teacher, and a 
home school coordinator at various Dallas elementary schools and
at Roosevelt High School; she is retiring from her position as 
lead guidance counselor at David W. Carter High School; and
	WHEREAS, Mrs. Barton was devoted to her work and assisted 
with a wide array of student activities over the years; she was 
the drill team instructor at Roosevelt High School, and she was 
a visiting teacher for Dallas elementary schools; and
	WHEREAS, Devoted to her profession, Mrs. Barton has been 
active in a number of educational organizations; she is a life 
member of the Texas Parent-Teacher Association and of the Jack 
and Jill of America Foundation; and
	WHEREAS, A guidance counselor at David W. Carter High School
since 1989, Shirley Barton has been a positive influence in the 
lives of countless students; she has adopted all her students as 
"her children," and her dedication to them has played a significant
role in their successes in life; and
	WHEREAS, To show their appreciation for her dedication and 
years of hard work, the administration, faculty, students, and 
staff of David W. Carter High School are hosting a retirement 
reception in her honor on May 25, 2005; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 
79th Legislature, hereby commend Shirley Jean Brooks Barton 
for her exceptional career in education and for her invaluable 
contribution to David W. Carter High School; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
