SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1013
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Dr. Rajaa Khuzai, a former member of the Iraqi National
Assembly and a current member of the drafting committee for the
Iraqi constitution; an outspoken proponent for women's rights in
Iraq, Dr. Khuzai served on the original Governing Council of Iraq
and represented the voice of Iraqi women to numerous world
leaders, including President George W. Bush, Prime Minister
Tony Blair, and United States Ambassador Paul Bremer; and
WHEREAS, A woman of exceptional courage who is respected for
her medical expertise, Dr. Khuzai has served as director of a
hospital in the southern city of Diwaniah for the past several
years while teaching at a local medical college; during a
short-lived rebellion against Saddam Hussein in 1991, she was
forced to perform 22 operations without electricity or an
anesthetist while Diwaniah was bombarded by the Iraqi National
Guard; and
WHEREAS, President of the Women's Organization in Diwaniah
and founder of the Women's Health Center in Baghdad and of the
Widow's Care Organization, Dr. Khuzai seeks to develop a women's
health care policy for post-war Iraq, with special consideration
given to early detection and prevention of cancer in women; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Rajaa Khuzai for her
extraordinary work on behalf of the women of Iraq; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
