SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1022
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Professor Sir Basil Markesinis, who was recently named
Knight Bachelor by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II; and
WHEREAS, A professor at The University of Texas School of Law,
Sir Basil was named Knight Bachelor for his contributions to
comparative law and international legal relations; he has
lectured in 25 different law faculties, and he is the author or
coauthor of 26 books and of more than 100 legal articles; and
WHEREAS, A tradition that began in the 13th century,
knighthood is one of the oldest honors in Christendom, and very
few people are awarded the title every year; Sir Basil's formal
investiture was held at Buckingham Palace on March 9, 2005; and
WHEREAS, Sir Basil is the only University of Texas
professor to ever receive a knighthood; he is also the only
professor from the university to be elected to the French
Academy, that country's highest academic recognition; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby commend Professor Sir Basil Markesinis
for his impressive and distinguished body of work and congratulate
him for the knighthood conferred upon him; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
