SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1024
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to pay
tribute to Lena Atkinson on the grand occasion of her 100th
birthday; and
WHEREAS, This gracious lady is well known for her charm and
generosity of spirit; born Lena Franklin in Brenham, Texas, on
June 5, 1905, she is now a beloved resident of Houston; and
WHEREAS, In spite of health problems, Lena still cooks
twice a day, shops for groceries, washes clothes, and cleans a
four-bedroom house for one of her sons and herself; and
WHEREAS, A revered and respected member of her community,
Lena Atkinson is noted for her engaging personality and her
courage and compassion for others; and
WHEREAS, She had four children, and her two remaining sons
are Leon Abbs, who is 77, and Willie Abbs, who is 78; she also has
a granddaughter, Patricia Ford, whom she raised; family members
will join her at her home on June 4, 2005, to congratulate her and
share in this milestone in her life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby recognize Lena Atkinson as a treasured
citizen of the State of Texas and extend best wishes to her on the
occasion of her 100th birthday; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as a memento of this special day.
