SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1043
In Memory
of
Melvin Lachman
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of San Antonio in mourning the loss of community leader and
businessman Melvin Lachman, who died April 7, 2005, at the age
of 86; and
WHEREAS, Melvin was born in San Antonio on April 25, 1918,
to Martin and Freida Karotkin Lachman; he graduated from Thomas
Jefferson High School and The University of Texas at Austin; and
WHEREAS, After serving as an officer in the United States
Army during World War II, he returned to San Antonio and cofounded
Lachman-Rose Company, which became the largest toy distributor
in the Southwest; the company was sold in 1971, and he briefly
retired but soon returned to the business world as vice president
for the Quincy Lee Company, where he was known for mentoring many
young people; and
WHEREAS, Melvin participated in numerous civic activities
and served on the board of directors of Saint Luke's Hospital,
the Jewish Community Center, the Texas Research and Technology
Foundation, the Cancer Therapy and Research Center, and the
Anytown, Texas Youth Camp; and
WHEREAS, In 1991, he was honored by the National Conference
of Christians and Jews for his dedication to humanitarian service,
and he was recognized with Israel's 40th anniversary award for
his work in the Jewish community; and
WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity,
Melvin Lachman was admired and respected by all who knew him, and
he will long be remembered for his wisdom, warmth, and valued
counsel; and
WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,
and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by
his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
family of Melvin Lachman: his wife of 27 years, Judith Lachman;
his daughters, Lynne Penner and Andrea Lachman; his sister,
Elaine Frank; his brother, Sid Lachman; his grandchildren,
Matthew Penner and Melanie and Andrew Weinberg; and his
stepchildren, Vicki Pitluk and Barry Pitluk; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so
in memory of Melvin Lachman.
