SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1044
In Memory
of
Douglas Lloyd Saunders, Sr.
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Douglas Lloyd Saunders, Sr., who died May 9, 2005, at the age of 81; and WHEREAS, Doug was born November 16, 1923, in San Antonio; he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and attended Texas A&M University for a year; when World War II broke out, he enlisted in the Army Air Force and served from 1942 through 1946 as a pilot with the 9th Air Force Troop Carrier Command in the European Theater; and WHEREAS, After the war ended, he returned to San Antonio, where he met Mary Fern Keller; the couple married in September of 1947 and returned to College Station; Doug graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1948; and WHEREAS, Two years later, after assignments in the oilfield for Sun Oil Company, Doug and Fern returned to San Antonio where Doug entered the home-building business; during his career he developed many real estate projects, including apartments, shopping centers, and residential properties; he preserved the natural features of the landscape and meticulously integrated them into the design when he built Elm Creek, the first gated community in San Antonio; and WHEREAS, An exemplary citizen, Doug was respected in the community for his many accomplishments; he was a member of the Texas A&M Association of Former Students, the National Association of Home Builders, and the National Real Estate Board; and WHEREAS, Doug Saunders was a devoted father and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Douglas Lloyd Saunders, Sr.: his sons, Douglas Lloyd Saunders, Jr., and John Keller Saunders; his daughter, Nancy Leigh Saunders Wright; his brother, John Henry Saunders, Jr.; and his six grandchildren; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Douglas Lloyd Saunders, Sr. Wentworth ________________________________ President of the Senate I hereby certify that the above Resolution was adopted by the Senate on May 27, 2005, by a rising vote. ________________________________ Secretary of the Senate ________________________________ Member, Texas Senate
