SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1073
In Memory
of
Henry Romo
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Henry Romo, who died May 5, 2005, at the age of 88; and WHEREAS, Henry was born February 13, 1917, in San Antonio; he left Lanier High School to operate a shoeshine stand to help support his family before he graduated; while working full-time, he enrolled in classes and graduated from San Antonio Tech at the age of 23; and WHEREAS, He married his sweetheart, Alicia Saenz, a year later; the couple has shared the challenges and joy of raising a family; and WHEREAS, He enlisted in the United States Air Corps after the attack on Pearl Harbor and was sent to study radio technology at The University of Texas; he served in the 5th Air Force, which provided air cover for General MacArthur's campaign in the Philippine Islands; and WHEREAS, When he returned to San Antonio, Henry opened Romo's Quality Food Store, which he owned for 25 years; after closing the grocery store he ventured into the restaurant business and opened La Cabana, and recently he had been restoring old houses; and WHEREAS, He was well respected in the community for his many accomplishments; he opened a chapter of the American GI Forum in San Antonio and was elected a Democratic precinct chairman; and WHEREAS, Henry Romo was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be long treasured by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, hereby extend its sincere condolences to the family members of Henry Romo: his wife, Alicia Romo; his daughter, Mary Alice Gamboa; his sons, Henry Romo, Jr., Ricardo Romo, Robert Romo, and Roger Romo; his sister, Consuelo Mendoza; his brothers, Arnulfo Romo and Arturo Romo; and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Henry Romo.
