SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1089

	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 
recognize the Encore Theatre in Houston on the occasion of its 
10th anniversary; and
	WHEREAS, A vibrant arts community contributes immeasurably 
to the spirit and character of a city, and the Encore Theatre is a 
vital part of the thriving cultural landscape of Houston; and
	WHEREAS, Founded by Harold J. Haynes to give 
African-American artists a place to give voice to their own 
perspective, the Encore Theatre provides an opportunity for a 
culturally and racially diverse audience to see the world through 
the prism of different points of view; and
	WHEREAS, Innovation and diversity are the foundation of a 
successful theater, and the Encore Theatre produces original 
plays by emerging playwrights, classic Greek and Shakespearean 
works, and important American landmarks such as Richard Wright's 
Native Son; and
	WHEREAS, The Encore Theatre takes seriously the mandate
of the arts to face issues of importance and annually produces 
plays that focus on women's issues, children at risk issues, and 
male-centered issues; and
	WHEREAS, Many of the Encore Theatre's actors, directors, 
and playwrights have gone on to success in film and on the 
Broadway stage; and
	WHEREAS, The Encore Theatre takes an active role in
the life of the Houston community at large; it sponsors food 
baskets for the homeless and provides complimentary tickets and 
performances for the boys housed at the Juvenile Detention Center 
and the Harris County Youth Village; and
	WHEREAS, With its commitment to cultivating new generations
of theater artists and audiences, the Encore Theatre is truly 
deserving of recognition; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby commend the Encore Theatre for its 
valuable contributions to the Houston community and join all 
associated with the theater in celebrating June 30, 2005, as 
Encore Day; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 
Encore Theatre as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
