SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1105
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
joining citizens across America in observing our national holiday,
Memorial Day, on Monday, May 30, 2005; and
WHEREAS, Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day
and was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed
on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers; in 1968, Congress
designated the last Monday in May as Memorial Day; and
WHEREAS, On Memorial Day, we pay homage to those who lost
their lives fighting for our nation, for it is due to their courage
and sacrifice that today our nation is free and prosperous; and
WHEREAS, This special day is an opportunity for Americans
everywhere to express their heartfelt gratitude to the United States
veterans, both living and dead, for the valor and dedication they
have shown on behalf of our beloved country; today, there are
over 1.5 million veterans living in Texas and deserving of our
praise; and
WHEREAS, Those who died for their country in World War I,
World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War,
Operation Iraqi Freedom, and other conflicts have left behind
legacies of courage and devotion for generations of American
citizens, as well as memories that will be treasured forever in
the hearts and minds of all who knew them; and
WHEREAS, It is a grateful nation today that reflects upon
our American heritage and recognizes the extreme sacrifices made
by all who serve in the armed forces; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, hereby express appreciation to all the brave
men and women who have served our great country and honor the
memory of those who died on its behalf; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
honor of all who sacrificed their lives to protect our nation.
