No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Local Government Code to require a person appointed as a beginning fire fighter or police officer to serve a probationary period of 18 months. The bill would take effect immediately if it receives the required two-thirds vote in each house; otherwise, it would take effect September 1, 2005. The provisions of the bill would apply only to persons employeed as a fire fighter or police officer on or after that date.

Under current statute, the minimum required probationary period is one year.


Local Government Impact

According to a sampling of fire departments and police departments, no fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
