No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Government Code to prohibit an active peace officer from using their status or rank as an officer to advertise or otherwise promote a private business in which the peace officer has an ownership interest or of which the peace officer is a manager. The bill would also allow the Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education to take disciplinary action against an officer who violates the prohibition.

The bill would take effect September 1, 2005.
