LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 79TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

April 5, 2005

TO:
Honorable Florence Shapiro, Chair, Senate Committee on Education

FROM:
John S. O'Brien, Deputy Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
SB800 by Lucio (Relating to elections and terms of office for trustees of an independent school district.), As Introduced

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would provide four-year terms for all local school board members and would require elections to be held every four years.  The bill would implement the requirement beginning with elections currently scheduled on or after November 8, 2005 by requiring that such elections be held on May 6, 2006 or November 7, 2006 at local discretion.

Local Government Impact

The potential increase in term length and the requirement that school board elections be held every four years could result in some savings to school districts.  However, on a statewide basis no significant fiscal implication would be anticipated.
