LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 79TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

May 12, 2005

TO:
Honorable Will Hartnett, Chair, House Committee on Judiciary

FROM:
John S. O'Brien, Deputy Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
SB1122 by West, Royce (Relating to the Board of Law Examiners board member compensation.), As Engrossed

No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would authorize an annual increase in compensation from $20,000 to $30,000 for reasonable and necessary actual expenses for the Board of Law Examiners (BLE).  The funds of the BLE are derived solely from various fees charged for administering the application process for applicants seeking a license to practice law in Texas.  The BLE indicates that the additional compensation can be paid within current fee revenue, which is collected and expended by the BLE outside of the State Treasury.  Because the Board is funded outside the Treasury, the additional cost to the BLE of $90,000 per fiscal year for additional compensation of $10,000 for nine members does not represent a State fiscal implication.

Local Government Impact

No fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
