LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 79TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

May 19, 2005

TO:
Honorable Dianne White Delisi, Chair, House Committee on Public Health

FROM:
John S. O'Brien, Deputy Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
SB1500 by Lucio (Relating to the allocation of federal funds directed to be used to support graduate medical education in connection with the state Medicaid program.), As Engrossed

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would require the Health and Human Services Commission to determine the needs of the state for graduate medical education (for the purpose of determining allocations of funds for that purpose), giving primary emphasis to graduate medical education in primary care specialties and recognizing the growth in residency training slots since 1997 in the Lower Rio Grande Valley and other health care shortage areas of the state.

Local Government Impact

It is possible that the provisions of the bill could result in a change to the allocation of graduate medical education funds received by local governmental hospitals.  It is also possible that the distribution would be unaffected.
