MINUTES SENATE COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION Tuesday, April 12, 2005 8:30 a.m. Capitol Extension, Room E1.028 ***** Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule 11.18, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Education was held on Tuesday, April 12, 2005, in the Capitol Extension, Room E1.028, at Austin, Texas. ***** MEMBERS PRESENT: MEMBERS ABSENT: Senator Florence Shapiro Senator Kip Averitt Senator Royce West Senator Steve Ogden Senator Kyle Janek Senator Tommy Williams Senator Todd Staples Senator Leticia Van de Putte Senator Judith Zaffirini ***** The chair called the meeting to order at 8:40 a.m. The following business was transacted: Previously, HB 2 was laid out in Committee. The committee substitute was adopted at the April 5, 2005 Senate Committee on Education hearing. Senator Shapiro explained to the Committee members the sections in CSHB 2 to be discussed regarding accountability. The provisions discussed were as follows: Article 2- Education Excellence Part B. Administrative Efficiency Part C. Accountability Article 4- Charter Schools At 8:42 a.m. Senator Staples assumed the chair Witnesses testifying and registering on the bill are shown on the attached list. At 9:07 a.m. Senator Van de Putte assumed the chair. At 10:02 a.m. Senator West assumed the chair. The chair moved that the public testimony be closed; without objection, it was so ordered. At 10:53 a.m. Senator Shapiro resumed the chair. At 10:53 a.m. Senator Shapiro moved that the committee stand recessed until 30 minutes after adjournment of the Senate; without objection, it was so ordered. At 1:26 p.m. the committee reconvened. Senator West in chair. The Committee resumed discussion on CSHB 2. Witnesses testifying and registering on the bill are shown on the attached list. At 1:50 p.m. Senator Zaffirini assumed the chair. The chair moved that the public testimony be closed; without objection, it was so ordered. Senator Zaffirini moved that HB 2 be left pending; without objection, it was so ordered. At 2:21 p.m. Senator Shapiro resumed the chair. There being no further business, at 2:22 p.m. Senator Shapiro moved that the Committee stand recessed subject to the call of the chair.
