         Pursuant to suspension of Senate Rule 11.18, a public hearing of  
         the Senate Committee on Education was held on Thursday, May 5,  
         2005, at Senator Shapiro's desk, in Austin, Texas.

         The posting rule, Senate Rule 11.18, was suspended to hear the  
         following bill(s): SB 1452 by Lucio, SB 1780 by Van de Putte, SB  
         1809 by Wentworth, SB 1883 by Ogden 
          
         The chair called the meeting to order at 1:04 p.m.  There being  
         a quorum present, the following business was transacted:   
          
         The chair laid out the subcommittee report on SB 1452 by Senator  
         Lucio.  Senator Williams then moved adoption of the subcommittee  
         report; there being no objection, it was so ordered.  Senator  
         Williams moved that SB 1452 do not pass but that CSSB 1452 be  
         reported back to the Senate with the recommendation that it do  
         pass and be printed.  The motion carried with a record vote of 8  
         ayes, 0 nay, 0 present not voting, and 1 absent.  Senator  
         Averitt moved that the bill be recommended for placement on the  
         Local & Uncontested Calendar; without objection, it was so  
         ordered.   
          
         The chair laid out the subcommittee report on SB 1780 by Senator  
         Van de Putte.  Senator Van de Putte then moved adoption of the  
         subcommittee report; there being no objection, it was so  
         ordered.  Senator Van de Putte moved that SB 1780 do not pass  
         but that CSSB 1780 be reported back to the Senate with the  
         recommendation that it do pass and be printed.  The motion  
         carried with a record vote of 8 ayes, 0 nay, 0 present not  
         voting, and 1 absent.   
  
         The chair laid out the subcommittee report on SB 1809 by Senator  
         Wentworth.  Senator Staples then moved adoption of the  
         subcommittee report; there being no objection, it was so  
         ordered.  Senator Staples moved that SB 1809 do not pass but  
         that CSSB 1809 be reported back to the Senate with the  
         recommendation that it do pass and be printed.  The motion  
         carried with a record vote of 8 ayes, 0 nay, 0 present not  
         voting, and 1 absent.  Senator Staples moved that the bill be  
         recommended for placement on the Local & Uncontested Calendar;  
         without objection, it was so ordered.   
          
         The chair laid out the subcommittee report on SB 1883 by Senator  
         Ogden.  Senator Ogden then moved adoption of the subcommittee  
         report; there being no objection, it was so ordered.  Senator  
         Ogden moved that SB 1452 be reported favorably to the Senate  
         with the recommendation that it do pass and be printed.  The  
         motion carried with a record vote of 8 ayes, 0 nay, 0 present  
         not voting, and 1 absent.  Senator Ogden moved that the bill be  
         recommended for placement on the Local & Uncontested Calendar;  
         without objection, it was so ordered.    
          
         Senator Zaffirini requested unanimous consent to be shown voting  
         aye on SB 1452, SB 1780, SB 1809, and SB 1883; there being no  
         objection, it was so ordered. 
          
         There being no further business, at 1:14 p.m. Senator Shapiro  
         moved that the Committee stand recessed subject to the call of  
         the chair.  Without objection, it was so ordered.
