Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule 11.18, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Education was held on Wednesday, October 18, 2006, in the Capitol Extension, Room E1.028, at Austin, Texas.

The chair called the meeting to order at 10:06 a.m. The following business was transacted:
Senator Shapiro made opening remarks to the Committee.
The Committee heard testimony from invited witnesses on Interim Charge 2: Study and make recommendations on educational reforms necessary to focus high schools and student performance on post-secondary readiness and success.
The Committee heard testimony from invited witnesses on Interim Charge 3: Review the operation of the State Board of Education, including its oversight of the Permanent School Fund, and make recommendations, if necessary, for appropriate legislative oversight and review.
Witnesses testifying and registering on Interim Charges 2 and 3 are shown on the attached list.
The chair moved that the public testimony be closed; without objection, it was so ordered.
There being no further business, at 2:54 p.m. Senator Shapiro moved that the Committee stand recessed subject to the call of the chair. Without objection, it was so ordered.
