AUTHOR'S / SPONSOR'S STATEMENT OF INTENT

 

The stretch of freeway of United States Highway 287 south of State Highway 180 to its intersection with Interstate Highway 820 in Tarrant County has no memorial designation.

 

H.B. 484 designates this highway section, located in and around Tarrant County, as the "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Freeway."  This bill provides that memorial and highway markers are to be erected and installed, dedicating the highway appropriately.

 

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

 

This bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, institution, or agency.

 

SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS

 

SECTION 1.  Amends Subchapter B, Chapter 225, Transportation Code, by adding Section 225.066, as follows:

 

Sec. 225.066.  DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., FREEWAY.  (a)  Designates the part of United States Highway 287 south of State Highway 180 to its intersection with Interstate Highway 820 in Tarrant County as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Freeway.

 

(b)  Requires the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to design and construct memorial markers indicating the highway number, the designation as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Freeway, and any other appropriate information.

 

(c)  Requires TxDOT to erect a marker at each end of the highway and at appropriate intermediate sites along the highway.

 

(d)  Provides that TxDOT is not required to design, construct, or erect a marker under this section unless TxDOT receives a grant or donation to cover the cost of the design, construction, and erection.

 

SECTION 2.  Effective date: September 1, 2007.
