                                                                                                       Committee Report (Unamended)

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

The Texas Rangers are a Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety and predate Texas as they were organized by Stephen F. Austin in 1823.  Currently, the Texas Rangers are not allowed by statute to be buried in the State Cemetery. The bill would allow a Texas Ranger who served honorably for at least 12 years or was killed in the line of duty to be buried in the Texas State Cemetery without having to apply under one of the exceptions.

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

It is the committee's opinion that this bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, department, agency, or institution.

ANALYSIS

HB1833 amends Section 2165.256(d) of the Government Code to include Subsection (7), which states, "an honorably retired officer of the Texas Rangers who served at least 12 years as a Texas Ranger or died in the line of duty" in the list of person eligible for burial in the state cemetery.

EFFECTIVE DATE

This Act takes effect immediately upon receipt of a 2/3 vote from all elected members of each house, or if the vote is not received, on September 1, 2007.
