Loop 534 runs along side the Kerrville Division of the South Texas Veterans Health Care System which began operations in 1947 to serve our area veterans.  It currently serves over 16,000 veterans in the Texas Hill Country.

The purpose of the bill is to bestow a great honor upon our local veterans, past, present and future who have given their life in defense of our country by designating a portion of Loop 534 as   Veterans Highway.

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

It is the committee's opinion that this bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, department, agency, or institution.

ANALYSIS

C.S.H.B. 2294 amends the Transportation Code to designate Loop 534, between Interstate Highway 10 and State Highway 173, in Kerrville, Texas as Veterans Highway.  The Texas Department of Transportation will design, construct and erect markers indicating the highway number, the designation as the Veterans Highway, and any appropriate information.

EFFECTIVE DATE

C.S.H.B. 2294 is effective immediately if it receives a two-thirds majority vote of the Legislature, otherwise it is effective on September 1, 2007.

COMPARISON OF ORIGINAL TO SUBSTITUTE

C.S.H.B. 2294 changes the Section number in Subchapter B, Chapter 225 of the Transportation Code from 225.072 to 225.066.  The substitute changes the name of the highway from Veterans Memorial Highway to Veterans Highway.  Finally, the committee substitute is a legislative council document.
