A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to the authority of the boards of trustees of certain |
|
school districts to close low-performing high school campuses. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter D, Chapter 11, Education Code, is |
|
amended by adding Section 11.171 to read as follows: |
|
Sec. 11.171. AGENCY APPROVAL REQUIRED FOR CERTAIN CAMPUS |
|
CLOSURES. The board of trustees of a school district may not order |
|
the closure of a district high school campus without first |
|
obtaining the agency's approval of the closure. This section |
|
applies only if: |
|
(1) the district has an enrollment of at least 200,000 |
|
students; and |
|
(2) the campus that the board proposes to close is |
|
considered academically unacceptable under Section 39.132. |
|
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2007. |
