A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to a study of the expenses of health care for certain
elderly inmates.
       BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
       SECTION 1.  INMATE HEALTH CARE STUDY. (a)  The Texas
Department of Criminal Justice shall conduct a study to determine
the number of inmates 55 years of age or older who:
             (1)  receive health care services from the department;
and
             (2)  have never been convicted of or received a grant of
deferred adjudication for an offense described by Section 3g,
Article 42.12, Code of Criminal Procedure.
       (b)  After determining the number of inmates described by
Subsection (a), the department shall determine the amount of
savings that would result to the state in health care services costs
if the department were to release the inmates into the community on
parole.
       (c)  Not later than December 1, 2008, the department shall
submit a report to the legislature regarding the results of the
study conducted under this section.
       SECTION 2.  EXPIRATION. This Act expires January 1, 2009.
       SECTION 3.  EFFECTIVE DATE. This Act takes effect September
1, 2007.
