A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to the effect of changes in high school enrollment on the |
eligibility of a graduating high school student for automatic |
admission to a general academic teaching institution. |
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
SECTION 1. Subchapter U, Chapter 51, Education Code, is |
amended by adding Section 51.806 to read as follows: |
Sec. 51.806. DETERMINATION OF GRADUATING CLASS |
ENROLLMENT. The total enrollment of a student's high school |
graduating class for the purpose of determining whether the student |
graduated with a grade point average in the applicable percent of |
the student's high school graduating class under this subchapter is |
the greater of: |
(1) the total number of students enrolled in the high |
school's junior class on October 1 of the student's junior year; or |
(2) the total number of students enrolled in the |
student's high school class on the last school day of the most |
recent semester in which the student was enrolled in the high school |
and that preceded the application deadline of the general academic |
institution to which the student is applying. |
SECTION 2. The changes in law made by this Act apply |
beginning with admissions to an institution of higher education for |
the 2008-2009 academic year. Admissions to an academic year before |
that academic year are governed by the law in effect before the |
effective date of this Act, and the former law is continued in |
effect for that purpose. |
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
Act takes effect September 1, 2007. |
